Retro Consoles: Nintendo Micro VS System

For the latest highlights on bargains and discounts for the consoles, head over to the brand new www.nineoverten.com.

Now this really looks interesting. Released in 1984, Nintendo's Micro VS System is a portable console that doesn't look like a typical Game N' Watch unit. The Micro VS System came with a screen measuring slightly lesser than 16 centimeters and brought about 2 player action with the supplied pair of controllers.

You can find used Micro VS System units selling for more than USD 30 on eBay whereas new ones are going for USD 70. However, collectors are in luck since Play-Asia is selling brand-new factory sealed units of the rare Micro VS System: Donkey Kong Hockey for just USD 49.90 each

Here are some pictures:
These are the technical specifications:
  • Official Nintendo Portable Game
  • LR44 (AA) Micro Alkaline Batteries included (1.5 V)
  • Play modes: vs Computer or 2 Player mode
  • Extendable controllers (upto 48cm)
  • Battery life: 5 months (an hour play per day)
  • Time display: 12-hour system
  • Alarm: Set in 1-min intervals
  • Limited availability
And the description taken from the Play-Asia product page:
Nintendo has revolutionized the gaming industry in many ways, the systems they have developed are often truly innovative. It widens the gaming communities and bring gaming experiences to new heights.

Arcade consoles have long been linking players together for fighting and sports games, and the Micro VS System was released in 1984 and is one of the earliest consoles that makes such gameplay portable. With the console's two handhelds, two players can join a game by sharing the screen between them.

This console is one of the rare artifacts that tells the historical development of the gaming industry, a true collector's item that any serious gamer must own and Play-Asia.com is lucky to get hold of a limited quantity of brand new factory sealed consoles.

Enemy Territory Quake Wars for Cheap!

Enemy Territory Quake Wars is out, and it's going for cheap at Play-Asia at only USD 29.90 (here), which translates to about RM 101. The Limited Collector's Edition is going for USD 52.90 (here), approximately RM 180. Both versions are cheaper by RM 68 and RM 19 then what The Software Boutique (TSB) is selling for.

The demo version nearly brought my PC to its knees, but I think some adjustments are in order. I should be able to play the game just fine. Here are some of the addition stuff that you'll get in the Limited Collector's Edition (taken from TSB):
  • Collectible Cards: 10 oversized, high-gloss collectible cards.
  • Bonus disc contents include concept art, HD videos including developer interviews, the evolution of ETQW packaging artwork, downloadable IM icons, ringtones, and music tracks.

How to get cheaper Xbox Live Gold Cards? Halo 3 Themed to Boot!

If you own an Xbox 360, chances are you have an Xbox Live account whether be it a Silver or Gold account.

Silver account holders can "download content, including dashboard themes, gamers pictures, game trailers/demonstrations, movies, game content such as new maps, weapons, levels, characters, challenges, expansions, arcade games and demos; connect with friends/players via voice chat, video chat, instant messenger and text message". (source: wikipedia)

All is nice and dandy but the real meat is in the Gold Account. A Gold Account "adds the ability (on top of the Silver ones) to play online with or against other Gold subscribers". (source: wikipedia)

Now, a Gold account isn't free, you'll need to pay for it. Hardcore gamers would go for the 12-month Gold Cards; Amazon sells these at a discounted price of USD 47.99 each. However, for those of you in Asia, free shipping is not an option for you, should you purchase them from Amazon.com.

So what is an Asian Xbox 360 owner to do? Play-Asia sells these cards at USD 49.90 each and unlike Amazon.com, they come with free shipping and have a HALO 3 theme to them, click here for further details. With a little bit of ingenuity, it's possible to get them at an even lower price.

Say what? You read that right. All you need is a valid Play-Asia coupon (USD 5 off for any purchase above USD 50) and a small item from Play-Asia's vast catalogue of stuff to bump the price of your shopping cart to slightly over USD 50. Some examples include small figurines or junk food like this pack of Magic POP Strawberry Crackling Candy (USD 0.49).

Using that pack of candy as an example, lets do some math:

Xbox Live 12-Month Gold Card (Halo 3) USD 49.90
+ Magic POP Strawbery Candy USD 0.49 = USD 50.39
- USD 5 Discount Voucher USD 5.00 = USD 45.39

You'll just need to pay a total amount of USD 45.39 with free shipping to boot! I've used this method several times to purchase figurines and games from Play-Asia as well. As for Vouchers, kindly leave a message in the comments section and I'll provide you with one Voucher code (I've 5 of them).

The Next Best Thing

Supposedly Chinese New Year just ended and you have collected a nifty sum of around RM500, which you, having not owned a video game console before, intend on using to enter a whole new world filled with surreal sights and sounds. But lets face it, RM 500 is chump change for upgrading your PC and it only covers a fraction of the price tag for any of the current generation consoles: the PS3, Xbox 360 and the Wii.

So, what does an aspiring but broke (despite having RM 500) video gamer do? Well, for starters, do yourself a favour and get a PS2. Why a PS2 you ask? Here are the reasons:
  • It's a video games console just past its peak (not that outdated)
  • It has a huge library of games and plenty of AAA titles, some of which still look very pretty by today's standards. The PS2 is also the bastion of Final Fantasy games and if you are a fan, you should really be looking into getting this console.
  • Great 1st and 3rd party hardware support. Steering wheels, gamepads (wired or wireless, have your pick), dance mats, and the Eye toy are just some of the peripherals that you can connect with a PS2
  • Parts and expertise are easily found should the need arise.
  • Original games are selling for cheap, get them brand new at online retailers like Play-Asia or at your local brick and mortar store. You can also get them secondhand on eBay.
  • You can get a 2nd-hand PS2 for around RM 400 and you'll have spare change for games!
